It’s such a shame I hadn’t thought of this sooner. I think perhaps we all feel somewhat invincible when we are in our younger years, though. As a high-energy person, I had never given it much thought. As I age and want to streamline goals, it is essential for me to fix energetic leaks.
This summer I started focusing on energy efficiency in our home. I made modifications to reduce energy consumption, efficiency and overall energy cost reduction.
Then, I started thinking about my own personal energy expenditure, of which we all have finite sources. Sure, we can replenish our energy by resting, eating healthily, and taking a rejuvenating vacation. But if more energy is going out than in, we are going to find ourselves in an energy deficit. Burned out.
I wholeheartedly believe that the Universe sends us signs to help us on our journey. As I was pondering this, I came across a podcaster sharing how essential it is to protect your energy. They emphasized that the wealthiest and most successful people focus on protecting their personal energy.
Then I started researching this. It can be so incredibly detrimental, unchecked energy leaks. And as someone who works in a profession of caring for others, it is important to teach others to have compassion and care for themselves. Teach them to protect their energy.
You can’t pour from an empty cup. It’s a simple concept to grasp. But sometimes, as caregivers, healthcare providers, parents, humans, etc… We somehow expect ourselves to have some reserve of superhuman strength. That we don’t have to care for ourselves at all.
And it might work for a little bit. Until it doesn’t. You may be thinking, what is an energy leak? I’ll offer you a few examples but I prefer to do an exercise. A few examples of what may be slowly siphoning your energy:
1) Social Media
2) Negativity in any form. (Newspapers, magazines, negative people, etc)
3) I like to call it, too many tabs open. I have too many things going on at once that are demanding my time and attention. (It really is ok to say no! I promise!)
4) Too much caffeine intake and poor nutrition
These are just a few that may be harming your energy levels. Think of your energy like a ball, and these are just slow little leaks of air. Enough of them and you have a problem.
I only listed a few because no one is the same, and life is not static. What may be now certainly won’t be the same one year from now. So, if you can just donate 15 minutes of your time, you may appreciate it. Start by getting into a comfortable position. Shut off any distractions (phone too!) and if needed, ask loved ones not to disturb you for a while.
Close your eyes. Set the intention in your mind or out loud that you want to know, “Where are the energy leaks in my life?” and “How can I remedy this?” Take a nice, deep breath: in through your nose and out through your mouth. I prefer 5 seconds in, 5 seconds out, but there is no right or wrong. Just focus on your breath and relax.
The answer will come. If your mind starts to wander, then gently refocus back on your breathing. I encourage this as everyone has their own journey and their own truth. What is true for you may not be true for me. Alternatively, where your energy leaks are now may change over time. And the remedies may change. There is no one-size-fits-all.
You can use this exercise anytime to connect with your higher self and gain more insight into your life!
